Are the Barber Old-Fashioned?.

Barber Shop in United States.

One week ago, I had the chance to listen such an funny audio clip. It was a barber shop simulation and it was describing the situation in a typical barber shop in the sixties, with such a hilarious voices and the sounds of the scissors, the barbers´s movements or any usual sound which was originated by a haircut service. I was getting relaxed with those familiar sounds, in fact I was imagining I was getting a haircut in that old-fashioned shop, and honestly I was about to fall asleep.

After listening the whole clip, the first thinking came to mind was my former curiosity to watch barbers´s videos on youtube. Most of them were from Eastern countries as Turkey, India or Nepal. I was very astonished how they worked in their usual duties and services if you compare with the typical barber´s or hair salon in Spain. They don´t care how long they take to perform the service, they are totally focused to offer a complete and effective service to improve the customer´s appearance.

Some part of this society use to consider effeminate or “gay” for a man to take pride in looking well-groomed or a man who spend longer in the bathroom than ladies but actually the word is dying out.

Going to the Barber´s shop

Foreign customer at Indian Barber Shop. (Youtube)

After watching more than 100 videos on youtube, there are many common points you can notice that they are repeating every time a foreign tourist is going to a barber shop:
  • When they arrive at the shop it seems they are expecting to enjoy a new experience rather than getting a shave or a haircut
  • The barber use to gesture rather than speaking with the costumer. He knows how foreign the ordeal is gonna be for the tourist.
  • At the beginning, the customers don´t look relaxed. It seems they are feeling a little bit nervous.
  • The additional barber services are: trimming eyebrows, plucking nosehair or using a flaming stick to burn away the light hair on ears.
  • Every service ends with a relaxing body, head and face massage.
Description of the typical service: Shaving.

As you can observe on youtube, the barbershops still give traditional single blade razor shaves. The barber first use to wrap a hot towel around client´s face. Next, the barber massages in a fruit based cream to clean out the pores. After that, hot towels are applied. By then, customer looks feeling nice and relaxed, on the verge of falling asleep relaxed. The barber then massages in some butter to soften the beard.

Next, the barber brush a warm lather into the beard and then he take a piece of razor sharp metal and scraps client´s beard off for the closest.

To end the service, they use to wrap another hot towel on his face along with a final face massage with a soothing vanishing cream. When the client step out of the shop, he looks like a new man, ready to take on the world.

Why do I like it?.

One of the reasons why I like that kind of service is because they are utterly focused to carry out their work in the best way. In their performance there is the same high attention to detail and customers use to be left satisfied with this way of working.

As an experienced and well-trained profession, they are used to do properly their work. We don´t need any quality control to measure customer care, they use to be satisfied with their service because it is totally high satisfaction-oriented.

On the other hand, people use to think the “high-maintenance” men is a trend from the beginning of 2000´s but if you have the opportunity to visit the East of Europe or any Asian country, you rethink about that for sure.

Barbershops in the eastern countries use to be places of continuity; they don’t change with the shifts in culture. The places and barbers look the same as they did when your grandfather got his haircut. There are no waxings, facials, highlights, or appointments. Just great haircuts and great conversation.

If you decide travel to the East of Europe or any Asian country, you will be able to enjoy this delighted service for sure.

To end, I would like to share a youtube video about “Baba” the cosmic barber of Puskhar (India), by the “Nomad Barber”. Enjoy it!
